Imphal, May 27 2025:
Condemning the Gwaltabi incident of May 20, the All Manipur Agriculture Workers Union (AMAWU) has demanded the resignation of top officials who issued the order to conceal "Manipur" from the MST bus ferrying the journalists.
A press release issued by S Nilakamal, secretary, AMAWU has said that the Chief Secretary, DGP and Security Advisor of Manipur have failed to issue a clarification to the people though seven days have passed since the incident.
On another note, AMAWU also highlighted the hardships faced by tenant farmers owing to the protracted conflict.
In order to ensure that agriculture workers reap a good harvest, the District Agriculture Officers should make sure to pre-stock quality seeds, pesticides and urea.
Notably, AMAWU has appealed to the Agriculture Department to introduce a new set of rules whereby the distribution of fertilizers to farmers is carried out through the DAOs and GP level cooperative societies only without the involvement of "social activists, political leaders or local MLAs".
Addressing the frequent landslides along NH 37 and NH 39 during the rainy season which affect the movement of trucks hauling pesticides and fertilizers, AMAWU has also called for the goods to be transported through Jiribam Railway Station and delivered at Tamenglong Khongsang Railway Station.
Additionally, the Union has urged the relevant authorities to deploy adequate security forces to guard the paddy fields in red zones and allow farmers to cultivate their land.
