Imphal, July 16 2026:
The Konthoujam Local Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) held a party meeting at its office in Khabi on Thursday to discuss the acute water shortage affecting agricultural fields across the Konthoujam Assembly Constituency.
In a release, CPI said the meeting reviewed reports from various local units and resolved to submit representations to all concerned Government authorities seeking immediate intervention.
Experts and farmers from Kangmong, Khabi, Heigrujam, Konthoujam and Khumbong villages presented reports during the meeting.
According to the reports, farmers in Langonjam Mamang Loukol and Konbakching areas of Kangmong are not receiving adequate water for paddy cultivation.
Due to lack of funds, some farmers have been forced to use private pumps to lift water.
Paddy fields across Heigrujam and Khaidem are also reeling under water shortage, with farmers unable to lift water from the Nambol River due to financial constraints.
Water scarcity has also hit extensive paddy areas in Khabi.
Farmers there have urged the Government to provide irrigation pumps.
Paddy fields in Ngairangbam, Khumbong and Moidangpok villages are facing a similar crisis.
With irregular rainfall forecast, farmers fear widespread crop failure.
Similar problems persist in Konthoujam, Phoijing, Bamdiar and Sagoltongba.
Speakers at the meeting said water could be lifted from the Nambul River and Merakhong for irrigation, but the Agriculture Department has not taken up any initiative so far.
The meeting further pointed out that despite adequate water in Loktak Lake, the Loktak Lift Irrigation (LLI) project's low and high canals are not supplying water to the affected areas.
Expressing concern, CPI leaders questioned whether crores of rupees spent on the LLI and other agriculture and irrigation projects over the years have benefited only a few individuals.
The party has urged the State Government to immediately arrange water supply to paddy fields in the constituency to prevent crop loss.
