Special show pays tribute to Ratan Thiyam

Manipur witnessed an inspiring cultural celebration as the National School of Drama, in collaboration with the iconic Chorus Repertory Theatre, curated a powerful three- day showcase honouring the legendary theatre maestro Ratan Thiyam.
Held at the historic Shrine Play House of Chorus Repertory Theatre, the special segment formed a significant part of the 25th edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav - the world's largest international theatre festival, said a press release issued by PIB Imphal.
The showcase opened today with Kanupriya, a narrative poem by Dharamvir Bharti, directed by late Ratan Thiyam and performed by The Chorus Repertory Theatre, Manipur.
The production set an evocative tone, immersing audiences in its poetic intensity and signature Manipuri theatrical aesthetics.
On February 1, the festival will present Leimarembi Ahilyabhai, written and directed by Dr Sanabam Thanileima and performed by the renowned Khenjonglang group of Imphal.
Staged in Meitei/Manipuri, the play will explore layered narratives rooted in Manipuri culture while showcasing the rich artistic lineage of the region.
The tribute will conclude on February 2 with Lairembigee Eshei (Song of the Nymphs), directed by Ratan Thiyam and performed by The Chorus Repertory Theatre, Manipur.
The production will mesmerize audiences with its lyrical movement, spiritual symbolism, and the timeless storytelling style for which Ratan Thiyam is globally admired.
By spotlighting Manipuri theatre traditions and honouring one of India's most celebrated theatre visionaries, the Imphal schedule of Bharat Rang Mahotsav will reaffirm the festival's mission- celebrating linguistic diversity, artistic excellence, and cultural heritage, it said.
The National School of Drama continues to strengthen India's cultural footprint through this grand international platform, bringing world-class productions to audiences across the country each year, it added.
