Sanjoy Ahanthem quits JD (U) along with Kumbi unit office-bearers, workers

Moirang, July 27 2026: Former Janata Dal United JD(U) candidate from Kumbi Assembly Constituency in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election and state vice-president of the party, Sanjoy Ahanthem, along with several office-bearers and workers of the party's 29-Kumbi Unit, has announced their decision to quit the party.

The decision was announced during a press conference held at Sanjoy Ahanthem's residence at Wangoo Sabal under Kumbi AC today in the presence of his supporters and party workers.

Speaking at the press conference, Sanjoy said that in view of the prevailing instability in the State and the various challenges to its territorial integrity, he, along with office-bearers and workers of the JD (U) 29-Kumbi Unit, had decided to resign from the primary and active membership of the party.

He said the decision was taken with the objective of contributing towards protecting and preserving Manipur's territorial integrity and safeguarding the political, social, economic and cultural rights and identity of the indigenous communities.

He also stressed the need to identify and deport illegal immigrants entering the State from across the international border and promote the principles of secularism enshrined in the Indian Constitution by bridging the gap between the hills and valley and work towards building a progressive State with equitable development.

He said the decision was taken after thorough deliberations with leaders and people of his constituency who had stood by him and guided him throughout his political journey.

Sanjoy further clarified that he was not looking for a regional or national party merely for the sake of political affiliation.

Rather, he said, he would associate with a political organisation that could work towards finding a lasting and permanent solution to the core issues underlying the ongoing violence, protect and preserve the political, economic and other rights of indigenous communities, bridge the existing gap and division between the hills and valley, and enable people to live together in communal harmony.

He said he would continue his political journey with a political organisation committed to addressing issues concerning the State collectively and in the larger interest of the people.

Sanjoy added that he would soon formally submit his resignation to the JD (U) .
