Imphal, November 24 2025: Veteran politician Okram Joy has commented on the state of Manipur's healthcare sector, calling it weak and expensive.

Poverty-stricken people face a lot of obstacles trying to receive proper healthcare during sickness, he said.

He made the statement during the inauguration of Manipal Cigna Health Insurance, Imphal Branch at MG Avenue Shiroy Forex Building today.

Addressing the gathering, O Joy pointed out that several sectors in the State are underdeveloped such as communications and highways/ roadways while others, including waterways and railways are yet to debut in Manipur.

Under such circumstances, lack of proper transport poses significant challenges in times of illnesses.

Noting the availability and quality of healthcare facilities in Manipur, he said that people have to spend a lot of money to get proper treatment.

Though this is inconsequential for the wealthy, the poor are left to face various impediments when dealing with health conditions, added O Joy.

He commended Manipal Cigna Health Insurance for opening a branch in Imphal and giving middle class families the opportunity to get insurance cover with the payment of premiums.

On the occasion, Thounaojam Ranel, Branch Manager said that Manipal Group of Health Care has tied up with US based Cigna Company to provide health insurance to people of this country.

Manipal Cigna has tied up with 15,000 hospitals in India, including Shija and Asian Hospital in Manipur.
