Awareness programme on single-use plastic held

A one-day awareness campaign on "Single Use Plastic Ban" was organised on Sunday at Mayeng Lamjao Awang Leikai Community Hall in Kakching district under the initiative of the Directorate of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Government of Manipur.
The programme was jointly conducted by the Mayeng Lamjao Gram Panchayat; Lingjel VLF, Lamjingbi VLF, Mangal VLF, Thoujal VLF, Laimanai SHGs, in collaboration with ASHA and Anganwadi workers, and the Village Water Sanitation Committee under Mayeng Lamjao Gram Panchayat.
The event was attended by Waikhong Police Station OC Inspector Dr Okram Jotin as chief guest; Mayeng Lamjao Gram Panchayat, chairperson Urikhinbam Narjit as functional president; and AE of PHED Kakching, Kangabam Roshan; and Mayeng Lamjao GP Panchayat Secretary Khumballambam Lemba as guests of honour.
As part of the campaign, a rally on the 'Single Use Plastic Ban' was also taken out from Mayeng Lamjao Community Hall to Lamjao Awang Leikai, with participants carrying placards bearing messages such as "Stop Using Plastic Bags", Don't be Mean: Feel Free to Use Dust-Bean", "We Want Evolution", "Stop Whining, Start Cleaning", "Cleanliness is the Key to Good Health" .
Worker Union Manipur president Anand Waikhom and Eco Network Manipur president Singthangamba Laishram also spoke on the occasion as resource persons, highlighting the harmful effects of plastic pollution and encouraging alternatives to single-use plastics.
A booklet published by the PHED Department was also distributed among the public, during the event.
