Wangoi AC MLA Khuraijam Loken has expressed frustration over the poor condition of Mayai Lambi road, questioning whether the State's Public Works Department (PWD) is being influenced by a contractor.
Speaking to the media at his residence at Yumnam Huidrom Thiyam Leishangkhong today, the MLA stated that it's natural for people to protest when roads remain in pathetic condition for an extended period.
He added that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had sanctioned Rs 2.6 crore for the short-term maintenance of Mayai Lambi Road in February this year, yet the project hasn't commenced.
Loken also stated that the recent blockade of Mayai Lambi road by different clubs, organisations and meira paibi groups demanding repairs of the road was a justifiable protest, given the road's deplorable condition.
Saying that he had repeatedly urged the repair of the road stretch with quality work during different Assembly sessions, he added that he was treated like an adversary despite being an NPP MLA of the ruling coalition Government for raising the issue.
The MLA added that he had also repeatedly urged the authorities at PWD to repair the Mayai Lambi road.
Saying that he had come across a work order for the short term maintenance of Mayai Lambi road amounting Rs 2.6 crore, he added that the road's condition wouldn't have deteriorated to its current state had the project been executed.
It is natural for people to express frustration when road projects are executed substandardly to siphon off funds, he said and reiterated that Mayai Lambi road's condition would be better if the short-term maintenance fund is utilized effectively in fixing potholes and other works.
Claiming that the work order for the road's short-term maintenance was awarded to HVS contractor, he questioned why the project remains stalled.
He asked if the PWD is powerless to instruct the contractor to begin work.
Stating that the PWD's handling of Mayai Lambi road is unacceptable, he added that he sometimes feel embarrassed to travel along the route.
He appealed to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to monitor the condition of the Mayai Lambi road and apprise the Centre to upgrade the road to National Highway standard.
