Floodwaters recede, but not for all

Imphal, September 19 2025:
Even as rainfall has ceased and floodwaters have receded in many areas, several locations in Imphal East remain inundated.
Places such as Nongmeibung and Wangkhei Angom Leikai in Wangkhei Constituency and Kongpal Mutum Leikai in Kshetrigao Constituency, continue to face flooding due to the absence of adequate drainage systems.
Notably, Manipur has experienced three flooding incidents this year - the first in May-June, the second in July, and the third this month.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, some locals of Wangkhei Angom Leikai and Nongmeibung said that the water floodings areas such as Purana Rajbari, Nongmeibung, Wangkhei Angom Leikai and Kongpal Angom Leikai should have been drained into the Kongba River through an outlet on the southern side of Kongpal Mutum Leikai.
However, the construction of a sewerage pumping station near the outlet has hindered the smooth drainage of water, worsening the flooding problem, they said.
They further noted that encroachments on drains and rampant construction of culverts contribute significantly to the flooding vulnerability of these areas.
According to them, one of the major causes of the flooding lies in the leaking sluice gates of Kongba River, which are meant to prevent water from the river from entering their areas.
However, the faulty gates allow water from the Kongba River to seep in, leading to inundation at their localities.
Further stating that they have been resorting to makeshift repairs by placing objects against the leaked sluice gates when the Kongba River water rises to prevent flooding, the residents urged the relevant authorities to look into the matter and do the needful.
