Imphal, October 14 2025:
The All Manipur Vegetable Wholesaler Association Trust (AMVWAT) has alleged that a syndicate has been monopolising the import of tomato to the State in cahoots with NSCN (IM) .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, AMVWAT vice-president Laishram Romesh said that tomato is imported to Manipur through Assam and Nagaland under an understanding with dealers based outside Manipur.
But some people, after forming a syndicate, started monopolising the tomato trade on October 9 in collusion with the NSCN (IM)'s Vegetable Tax-in-Charge, he said.
Acting in collusion with the NSCN (IM)'s Vegetable Tax-in-Charge, four members of the syndicate based at Dimapur detained Imphal-bound vehicles carrying tomatoes, Romesh said.
The syndicate members told tomato traders that they must buy tomatoes only from the syndicate.
If tomatoes are bought from other places, the traders must pay Rs 1 to 2.50 lakh per vehicle, the syndicate members told the tomato traders, according to the AMVWAT vice-president.
He also named the NSCN (IM) man as well as the four syndicate members, and gave their mobile phone numbers.
He also sought immediate attention of the Government to this unlawful act of monopoly.
