'Prevention first': Babina, AOI roll out adult vaccination in Imphal

Imphal, May 09 2026: Babina Specialty Hospital and American Oncology Institute (AOI) have launched Manipur's first adult vaccination programme with a special focus on adult immunisation.

The programme was inaugurated on Saturday at Babina Specialty Hospital, Khabeisoi.

Dr Babina Thangjam, Laboratory Director, Babina Diagnostics; Manas Majumdar, Facility Director, AOI; and Dr Th Tomcha, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology, AOI, graced the event as presidium members.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Babina said the first adult vaccination programme in the State would help protect many adults from several diseases.

She said vaccination drives have long focused on children and pregnant women, but advances in modem healthcare have led many countries to run adult vaccination programmes to guard against multiple diseases.

"Vaccination for adults works as preventive care before illnesses strike", said Dr Babina while adding that many lives were saved during the COVID-19 pandemic because people were vaccinated.

"Yet, awareness about adult vaccination remains low.

The programme is limited to a few urban areas", she said.

She said cost concerns and fear of side effects have kept people from knowing more about adult vaccination, slowing its uptake.

She asserted that healthcare providers need to educate the public properly about adult vaccination.

'If adults eat nutritious food, exercise regularly, and get vaccinated on time, they can live long, healthy lives without frequent illness.

Let us all work together for this", she said.

Doctors and staff of Babina Specialty Hospital and AOI also attended the event.
