Imphal, January 31 2026:
The All Manipur Nupi Marup (AMNM) has expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Irom Achoubi, a long-serving president of the Konthoujam Area Committee, AMNM and a formidable figure in Manipuri activism.
Irom Achoubi, 86, passed away on January 29, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to the community and various social causes.
As per a release issued by AMNM Konthoujam Area Committee, Irom Achoubi was a member of the Manipur Mahila Sammelan since the 1970s and a leading figure in numerous movements aimed at uplifting women and addressing societal issues.
Her remarkable journey was marked by tireless advocacy for women's rights, spearheading movements like anti-alcohol, farmers' rights, and repealing AFSPA.
She championed the Manipuri language, fought corruption, and pushed for 33% women's reservation.
Beyond her high-profile activism, Achoubi was known for her personal strength and community spirit.
After her husband's death, she worked hard to educate her children.
She also actively participated in local efforts to build embankments in the low-lying Khabi area, where frequent flooding was a concern, encouraging other women to join in what was previously a male-dominated task.
In her honour, the AMNM Konthoujam Area Committee convened a condolence meeting to mourn the sudden demise of the veteran activist.
During the meeting, members of the committee shared the grief of the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
