The first Senapati District Volley Ball Association (SDVA) men and women volley ball tournament has kicked off today at Mini Stadium Ground Senapati with the first match played between Poumai Students' Union and Maram Students' Union.
The inaugural function of the event was graced by Retd manager AIR India, D.Loli Adani as Chief Guest, president of ICHAM, Rajendro Singh as guest of honour, and SP Senapati as functional president.
The chief guest said, sports makes one physically and mentally sound, and it also makes someone disciplined.
"Once you become a true sportsman mental discipline is instilled in you and you become a gentleman", said Adani who is a former member of Gojurio Karate Federation of India, and a 2nd degree black belt in karate.
"Training and practice makes one successful in the field of sports and there is no means beyond this to become a true sportsman", he maintained.
The president of ICHAM, Rajendro Singh, speaking on the occasion said, without sports we can't survive and once the spirit of sports is inculcated in one's life, then that person gets the strength of abstaining himself from being indulged in anti social activities like using drugs, alcohol etc, and as a result he becomes health conscious, he added.
Ruing over the status of the society in Manipur which he claimed to be far behind the spirit of discipline, the president urged the youths of today to pave the way towards ensuring an atmosphere where the spirit of sports is inculcated in every individual.
Altogether, seven teams participated in the event which is designed to select the best team to represent the district in the forthcoming inter-district volley ball tournament scheduled to be held on Nov 4 to 8 this year.
Speaking to this reporter, the president of SDVA, TH Panii said, this kind of event ever held for the first time in the district headquarters is meant not only to groom the sports-persons but also to bring about unity in the district which is inhabited by many tribes.
The event was successfully marked by the presence of Assistant Commandant CRPF, president NPO and Vice president ANSAM.
