Court sentences man to 8 years RI

RK Memcha, Judge of the Fast Track Special CourtNumber 1, Manipur, yesterday sentenced 25-year-old convict Lairenjam Naoba to rigorous imprisonment for 8 years for committing a crime under Section 366 IPC, related to the kidnapping/abduction of a minor victim.
Lairenjam Naoba 25, s/o (L) Mera of Lairenjam Awang Leikai was convicted on June 23 and he was produced before the Court for sentence hearing today.
During the hearing, Special PP A Nilachandra submitted that the convict committed a heinous crime against a minor child and did not show any mercy.
He submitted that the convict committed the offence despite having a wife and children, and prayed that an exemplary punishment be given to him.
The defence counsel, on the other hand, submitted that the convict is unaware of his children's well-being and education due to lack of communication from his family members.
The defence counsel said that the convict used to work as a mason and labourer, and now feels remorse for his actions.
The defence counsel prayed for a minimum sentence considering the future prospects of the convict's children and taking into account the convict's submissions.
He also mentioned that the convict had no prior criminal record.
It was further submitted that the convict has already undergone custody for 3 years and 4 months in connection with the case.
The defence counsel prayed before the Court to set off the period the convict had spent in custody.
Meanwhile, the mother of the victim submitted medical documents showing the treatment of his daughter.
The Court, after hearing the submission of Special PP, defence counsel, convict, victim mother and on perusal of the case record sentenced the convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 8 years.
