Imphal, January 22 2026:
A sit-in protest was held today at Wangkhei Pukhrambam Leirak against the alleged assault of a man along Thangapat Road.
The demonstration was organized by the meira paibi groups of Wangkhei Pukhrambam Leirak and Hijam Leirak.
The assaulted individual is Laisham Romen, a resident of Kakwa Naorem Leikai.
Speaking to the media at the protest site, L Sanjarani, a relative of Romen, stated that the incident occurred on January 18 at around 4.20 pm, and Romen is still receiving treatment in an ICU .
She said that the wife of Romen is from Wangkhei Pukhrambam Leirak.
Saying that the incident occurred while Romen was returning after visiting his aunt at Wangkhei Puja Lampak, she explained that Romen drove outside the cement concrete road because he saw other vehicles doing the same.
She said that Romen stopped his vehicle upon noticing some bamboo along the route and attempted to clear it.
However, while doing so, he was struck on the head by a heavy object by unidentified miscreants, she said.
She further mentioned that the miscreants continued the assault even after his wife and son pleaded for them to stop.
The assailants used harsh language, such as "Leikaida laklaga nakhoina touningba touba yabra," she said.
She added that a police case has been filed at the Porompat police station, but no arrests have been made so far.
She also stated that Romen lost consciousness after the assault, but no one came to his aid.
