Yearlong observance of L Samarendra birth anniversary begins

Imphal, July 20 2025: The yearlong observance of the 100th birth anniversary of author Laishram Samarendra commenced on Sunday at Manipur Press Club, with a recital of the poems penned by him.

Organised by Laishram Samarendra Birth Centenary Celebration Committee, the inaugural function was attended by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Assam president Dr Phuritsabam Birmani as chief guest, Sahitya Akademi awardee Yumlembam Ibomcha as guest of honour and Manipur University School of Humanities former dean Prof Polem Nabachandra Singh as functional president.

In his speech, Birmani informed that Meetei Mayek would be taught from the primarily level in schools in Assam from July onwards.

He stressed the need for the government of Manipur to be more proactive in promoting Manipuri language in states like Assam and Tripura, while expressing wish for financial assistance for the Manipuri citizens settling in the these states.

Biramani also recalled the life history of Laishram Samarendra and his contributions to the literary wealth of the state.

He said that the young, emerging authors and social activists need to remember the courage of writers who used their pens to reform the society for the better.

In his speech, Yumlembam Ibomcha said that Samarendra's poems carry both the humorous and dark times in a human life.

He also recounted experiences shared with the writer during a trip to Kolkata, and the author's celebrity-like status in the literary circle.

Celebration Committee convenor and author Saratchand Thiyam informed that efforts are being made to publish an autobiography of Samarendra.

During the observance, Samarendra's poems were recited by Loitongbam Dorendro, RK Hemabati, Khwairakpam Biswamitra, Lanbon Kabui, Konthoujam Robin, Raheijuddin Sheikh, Laishram Romola, Bhawani Adhikari, Thoudam Netrajit, Wanglembam Niranjan, Mangka Mayanglambam, Alia Keithellakpam, Yengkhom Shija and Athe Thiyam.

As part of the observance, the dignitaries also released a souvenir, "Sargada Awaba Amasung Nungaiba (Meetei Mayek Edition)" .
