World Hypertension Day observed

World Hypertension Day 2025 was observed widely in the State on Saturday to raise awareness and promote hypertension prevention, detection and control.
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal celebrated World Hypertension Day 2025 by organising a special health awareness programme at the Cheirap Court Complex, Uripok, Imphal.
The programme was conducted under the global theme "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer", specifically for advocates, women members, and senior members of the bar.
As per a release issued by RIMS, the programme was graced by dignitaries, including Senior Advocate Khaidem Mani, Senior Advocate Ng Premkumar and Dr Th Suraj Singh, Head, Department of Neurology, RIMS, Imphal.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Suraj Singh highlighted the importance of raising awareness about hypertension, particularly among senior advocates, and emphasized the need for a healthy lifestyle to prevent non-communicable diseases.
He noted that the initiative was aimed at sensitizing members of the legal profession on managing stress and maintaining overall well-being.
Khaidem Mani commended the RIMS authorities for organising such a thoughtful and much-needed programme for the legal fraternity.
"In light of the ongoing unrest and stress-related challenges in the State, hypertension has emerged as a growing concern", he added.
Dr Soubam Christina, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, and Dr Singamlung Kamei delivered insightful talks on hypertension, preventive measures, and practical guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
As part of the programme, free blood pressure checks, blood sugar level testing, and ECG examinations were conducted for all the participants.
Doctors from the Department of Medicine, RIMS, Imphal, were actively involved in providing medical support and counseling during the event.
Free medicines were also distributed.
Senior Citizen Khundrakpam AC
Senior Citizen, Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency also observed World Hypertension Day at The Royal Academy of Manipur, Pangei.
The event sponsorship of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd and JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd, featured a free health check-up for senior citizens, medicine distribution, and a discussion on PMJAY scheme.
At the event, Dr Kshetrimayum Kala, retired Professor of RIMS, Imphal said that consuming a healthy diet and managing stress are crucial for preventing hypertension-related diseases.
He asserted that World Hypertension Day was first observed in 2005 to raise awareness about high blood pressure, a condition affecting over a billion people globally, many of whom are unaware they have it.
"In Manipur alone, it is estimated that 20-30% of the population suffers from hypertension, with similar or higher rates reported in other Indian States", he added.
Furthermore, Dr Kala said that lifestyle modifications are crucial for long-term hypertension prevention and control, as they can effectively reduce and manage blood pressure without relying solely on medication.
