L Kailun, IG (Law and Order) Zone II, while speaking to media persons at SP Imphal West conference hall today stated that yesterday, police received a complaint filed by new VC of Manipur University that he (new VC), along with some of his faculty/staff, went to the university.
But on reaching the university, they were forcibly stopped by MUTA and MUSA leaders, who also confined them for around three hours.
As per the complaint, the new VC mentioned they were forced to write an apology letter before they were released.
Following the incident, the new VC lodged a written complaint to Singjamei PS and police took up a criminal case against the leaders of MUSU and MUTA.
Based on the complaint, police carried out a raid at the boys hostels ofManipur University as well as the residential area, from around midnight till early today morning, with the permission of the VC and in the presence of the Executive Magistrate, he said.
When police reached MU, some students came out and tried to prevent them from going toward the hostels.
However, the IG claimed that the police, by using minimum force, managed to overcome the students and carried out search at the boy's hostels and some residential area.
During the raid, police picked up some lecturers and Professors of Manipur University as well as MUSU leaders who were involved in detention and illegal confinement of the new VC.
He also said that police have picked up more than 80 students for proper verification for their involvement in the alleged incident and those who are found guilty will be detained further while others will be released after the verification.
6 teachers have been detained so far by police, Kailun said.
He also clarified that due to pelting of stones by students toward the police, they were forced to use tear gas shells during the incident.
He further said that to avoid further escalation of issue and to enable the police to maintain law and order situation and to stop spread of baseless rumours, internet services have been suspended in the State for five days.
If things improve and the situation returns to normal, specially in MU area, then they will lift the ban on internet service before the said five days, he said.
