Imphal, May 28 2025:
The Socialist Student's Union of Manipur (SSUM) has submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla requesting special provisions for internally displaced students including scholarships, budget allocation, hostel facilities, seat quotas at both private and Government schools and free study materials.
In the letter, SSUM drew the Governor's attention to the critical educational challenges faced by internally displaced students who often face multiple barriers in accessing birther education due to financial, social, and infrastructures hardships despite their potential and aspirations.
To ensure that these vulnerable students are not left behind, SSUM has requested the Governor to introduce fully funded or merit-cum-means based scholarships; earmark a portion of the annual State education budget exclusively for the academic development of displaced students; provide free or subsidized accommodation and food in hostels and students welfare homes with access to counselling and peer support; introduce a specific quota in both State and private run institutes with fair representation across streams, especially in technical and professional courses; establish a nodal cell at the State and district levels to coordinate the educational support and track students' progress; provide free textbooks and academic materials particularly for Class XI and XII across all Government and private schools; facilitate digital access to textbook via mobile apps, community centers and relief camps; direct the State Education Department to collaborate with NGOs and philanthropic bodies to support educational continuity for theses affected students and issue necessary guidelines to district-level authorities to identify and provide immediate assistance to displaced student in their jurisdictions.
On behalf of the internally displaced students, SSUM has urged Governor Bhalla to take appropriate and timely action to address this crucial issue.
