Imphal, August 26 2025:
The Social Welfare department organised a State level Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan programme at Hotel Imphal today.
The programme graced by CAF&PD secretary N Kheda Varta, Social Welfare Director Anna Arambam and Health and Family Welfare Joint Secretary Shamim Ahmad Shah as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively took a pledge to stand against drug and substance abuse.
Speaking at the event, N Kheda said that despite Manipur being known for sports, art, and culture, many youths often turn to substance abuse, possibly due to the lack of platforms to showcase their skills and talents, among other factors.
Noting that drugs and alcohol can be medicinal when used in a controlled and prescribed manner, he appealed to all to stand against substance abuse and provide youths with opportunities to hone their skills.
He also said that youths getting addicted to mobile phones need to be guided and supported to find more productive pursuits.
Social Welfare Director Anna Arambam stated that Manipur's porous border and the prevailing situation have turned the State into a transit route for contraband items.
Saying that the drug menace has severely affected Manipur's economy and society at large, he emphasized that the government cannot tackle it alone, requiring support from academicians, religious leaders, CSOs, NGOs, and the public.
Anna stated that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, a Nationwide anti-drug campaign, is being implemented in all 16 districts of Manipur.
She added that the Social Welfare department is collaborating with NGOs, CSOs, and other relevant departments and stakeholders to prevent drug and substance abuse.
Continuing that the Manipur State Policy on Psychoactive Substances Act, 2019, is now operational, she maintained that several rehabilitation centers have also been established in Manipur.
A short film related to the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was released during the event.
Prizes for a wall painting competition held as part of the campaign at Dingku Road on August 24 were also distributed.
