Workshop held

A two-day National workshop on "Examining Manipuri as a classical language" wrapped up at the auditorium of Ng Mani College, Khurai Chairenthong today.
The workshop was organised by the Department of English, Manipuri and IQAC of Ng Mani College under the aegis of State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT) .
The event was attended by Professor Chungkham Yashawanta, former Dean, School of Humanities, Manipur University as the chief guest; Dr W Jibankumar, Principal, Ng Mani College as the functional president; Moirangthem Umakanta, VP, Ng Mani College and Moirangthem Ibotomba, Assistant Professor, Manipuri Department, Ng Mani College as the guests of honour.
On the occasion, Professor Chungkham Yashawanta urged people to remember that the obligation of developing Manipuri language falls on the people speaking the language.
He said that Manipuri fulfils all the criteria to be designated as a classical language.
However, due to negligence, Manipuri was not among the languages recently conferred classical language status by the Centre, he said.
He expressed confidence that Manipuri language will successfully attain this status in the near future.
During the two-day workshop, Professor N Pramodini Devi, Dean of Humanities; Professor Kh Dhiren Singh, Department of Linguistics, Assam University, Silchar; Professor W Nabakumar Singh; Professor Chungkham Yashawanta Singh and Dr Longjam Anand presented enlightening speeches as resource persons.
