Imphal, October 13 2025:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has accused BJP's double-engine Government of erasing a key episode of the history of Manipur by demolishing the Manipur Rajbari, Shillong where the historic Manipur Merger Agreement was signed.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that the MPCC, like all sections of the society, strongly condemned the demolition of Manipur Rajbari, Shillong.
He said that the State Government awarded a work order to M/S Meitei Constructions Pvt Ltd on November 20, 2023 for development of the building where the Manipur Merger Agreement was signed: According to the work order, the name of the work is "Reconstruction/restoration of Heritage Building".
The MPCC president said that all the components of the building where Maharaja Bodhchandra signed the Manipur Merger Agreement were destroyed beyond retrieval when the building was demolished.
He said that the historical building was demolished by the Planning and Development Authority (PDA).
He then asked whether any Cabinet decision was adopted in 2023 to demolish the Manipur Rajbari, Shillong and why the building was demolished only this month when the work order for its reconstruction/restoration was awarded in 2023.As the heritage building has been destroyed completely, a key chapter of the history of Manipur has been erased.
Responsibility must be fixed on the top ranking officials of Planning and Development Authority (PDA), MAHUD and the then Chief Minister, Meghachandra said.
Even though the President's Rule is completing one year soon, no concrete step has been taken up to rehabilitate IDPs at their homes.
At the same time, free movement on National Highways still remains a far cry, he said.
There may be many causes for the Manipur crisis but the double engine Government is responsible for the current internal situation.
As such, it is in the hands of the double engine Government to work out a solution to the crisis, he said.
Whereas the level of corruption and unemployment rate have been soaring, none of the major engineering departments have been preparing any work programme since 2022 which means there is no development, Meghachandra said.
No doubt, a popular Government is needed in the State but there is little hope for a popular Government.
The State's financial condition has deteriorated to the extreme and the State Government owes loans to the scale higher than 50 per cent of its annual budget.
The Government is bearing interest of Rs 20,000 crore, the MPCC president said.
He said that the Centre has rejected the proposal for formation of a popular Government in Manipur although BJP has more than enough MLAs to form a Government He urged the Governor to recommend the Centre for dissolution of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and holding fresh elections.
Regarding what he wrote in social media on NPP president Conrad K Sangma's visit to the State, Meghachandra said he was reflecting the re-alignment moves in the North East region because of the weakening of BJP in the region.
