World Suicide Prevention Day observed

The National Mental Health Programme (NHM) Manipur and the Directorate of Health Services today observed World Suicide Prevention Day at IMA Hall, Lamphelpat.
The observation held under the theme "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action "Star the Conversation" was graced by Health Services Director Dr N Hemantakumar.
NHM Manipur State Mission Director Dr M Dinesh and Family Welfare Director Dr N Bino attended the function as president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr N Hemantakumar said that suicide has been claiming many precious lives across the world.
Most of the victims of suicide are youngsters even though it also affect older persons to some extent, he said.
The suicide rate in Manipur is lower than the National average but this is no matter of relief for every life claimed by suicide is precious, Dr Hemantakumar said.
He underscored the need to understand the warning signs of suicide.
When any one talks about stress, anxiety or depression, he/she should not be ignored.
"We need to listen to them patiently and fully", the Health Director said.
He said that proper conversation and counselling can save many precious lives.
The gathering also took a collective pledge to prevent suicides.
