Fuel theft case : Court remands man

Imphal, September 07 2026: The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, today remanded 25-year-old Abdul Gafar to judicial custody till September 21 on the charge of stealing 51 litres of diesel from the storeroom of the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) on the intervening night of September 4 and 5 .

Abdul Gafar (25), son of Riyajuddin of Kyamgei Takhok Makha was produced before the Court by a team of City Police Station on completion of his police custody period and prayed for his remand in judicial custody.

The investigation revealed that the accused had been staying inside the IMC campus to look after the duties of his father, who worked as a chowkidar at the corporation, in his absence.

The Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) appearing for the State submitted that on September 5, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, IMC, reported to the Officer-in-Charge of City Police Station that an incident involving the unauthorised removal of vehicle fuel from the IMC storeroom had come to the notice of the Corporation.

According to the APP, verification of CCTV footage installed inside the IMC premises showed the accused entering the storeroom and removing vehicle fuel without authorisation.

During the course of investigation, the accused was examined in connection with the case and admitted to his involvement in the theft.

Police subsequently seized two gallons containing 18 litres of diesel each and three gallons containing five litres of diesel each, the APP said.

The accused was arrested by a team of City Police on the afternoon of September 5 .

During police custody interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that he had stolen 51 litres of diesel from the IMC storeroom during the intervening night of September 4 and 5 and concealed the fuel inside a vehicle parked within the IMC office campus, the Prosecution submitted.

Based on the disclosure, the alleged stolen fuel was recovered from the vehicle, following due procedure, the APP said.

After perusing the case records and hearing the submissions of the APP for the State, the Court remanded Abdul Gafar to judicial custody till September 21 .
