Scribes to protest today

Imphal, July 06 2025: The All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) have decided to hold a sit-in protest against the Manipur Government's inaction on taking appropriate measures against those responsible for obstructing media persons at Gwaltabi on May 20, 2025 .

The resolution was taken during a joint meeting of AMWJU and EGM today and the sit-in demonstration is scheduled for tomorrow from 10 am to 1 pm at the Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Community Hall.

The incident occurred when a group of journalists enroute to Ukhrul to cover the opening ceremony of the Shirui Lily Festival were unlawfully blocked by security personnel at Gwaltabi on May 20, thereby hampering press freedom and the public's right to information, AMWJU said in a statement.

Saying that the State Government has failed to initiate any visible action or issue a clarification regarding the Gwaltabi incident despite repeated appeals, AMWJU added that the journalist community views the response of the Government as a serious affront to freedom of press.
