Imphal, August 29 2025: A Fast Track Special Court has sentenced the stepfather and biological mother of a minor girl to serve time in jail under POCSO Act.

The stepfather, aged 58, convicted for aggravated sexual assault of the minor daughter under Section 10 of POCSO Act, shall undergo rigorous imprisonment of 5 years and pay a fine of Rs 50,000, ordered RK Memcha, the Judge of the Fast Track Special Court today.

The biological mother, aged 42, shall undergo 6 months imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs 20,000 for failing to report the crime.

During the sentence hearing, the Special Public Prosecutor asked the Court to award maximum punishment to the stepfather to send a strong message of deterrence against crimes against minors.

On the other hand, the woman failed her duty as a mother and she shouldn't be spared.

No clarification should be accepted at any cost and the Court shall not show leniency towards the mother, said the Prosecutor.

The Court, after hearing the submissions of the Prosecutor and defense counsel, sentenced the convicted step father to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 5 years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000.In case the convict fails to pay the fine, he shall undergo further 3 months simple imprisonment, said the Judge.

In the case of the mother, the Judge observed that she has been in custody for 7 months during the investigation of the case and as per Section 21 of POCSO Act, she is punishable for 6 months, a fine, or both.

As the biological mother has already undergone imprisonment of 7 months, she is not liable for undergoing substantive offence and fine, observed the Judge.

The Judge also directed the State to provide a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh to the minor victim within 30 days.
