At a time when the members of urban local bodies are protesting against reported unbearable demands made by UG groups, the proscribed KCP (MC) has penalised the Chairperson and a councillor of Lamlai Nagar Panchayat for swindling public fund.
The accused Chairperson is identified as Elangbam Mani (66) s/o late Kondum of Lamlai Mayai Leikai while the councillor is one Laikhuram Rajeshwar (32) s/o late Kanto of Challou Maning Leikai.
Parading the duo before media persons at a location in the valley today, KCP (MC)'s Imphal East commander Keni disclosed that Mani swindled Rs 20,000 out of Rs 7 lakhs sanctioned to the Nagar Panchayat.
Besides misappropriating another Rs 20,000 from Rs 3 lakhs sanctioned for purchase of computer sets, the Chairperson took another Rs 20,000 from the individuals already recruited as computer operator.
Altogether, Mani was accused of Rs 60,000 .
From the Rs 7 lakhs sanctioned in the first place, a car (Santro) and a tractor were bought.
After renovating Lamlai market and the Nagar Panchayat office and the community hall were repaired, there was a balance amount of Rs 20,000, elaborated the district commander.
Out of Rs 3 lakhs installation of computer sets, Rs 66,000 was used in procuring a computer set.
After utilizing the remaining amount on staff training, purchase of computer table and recruitment of a computer operator, there was a balance of Rs 20,000 .
In addition to these balance amounts, Chairperson Mani took another Rs 20,000 from the computer operator, disclosed Keni.
Pledging to pay back the total amount he swindled to the Nagar Panchayat, Mani confessed his faults.
On the other hand, councillor Rajeshwar sold out the car (Santro) without necessary approval of the Nagar Panchayat.
However, as the same car was involved in a case, police have seized the car from Sana Shabi Awang Khunden yesterday, informed the district commander of the outfit.
Yet, Rajeshwar has paid back the money he took from the buyer of the car.
As both the accused have confessed their faults, they would be set free with light punishment.
However, if they are found indulging themselves in such anti-social activities in future, they will be given fitting punishment without any warning, warned the KCP (MC)'s Imphal East district commander.
