Imphal, August 26 2025:
A difference of opinion has emerged between the National People's Party (NPP) organization and its legislators over the party's stance on supporting the formation of a popular Government, suggesting a possible rift within the party.
Even as NPP Manipur president Joykumar had stated that the party's support for a popular Government would be conditional, MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan countered that Joykumar's comments were made without consulting the party's Central leadership, representing his personal views rather than the party's official position.
Sheikh Noorul Hassan is an NPP MLA representing Kshetrigao AC.
Notably, Y Joykumar had on August 24 stated that the NPP's support for Government formation would be based on conditions, including a roadmap to end the conflict and a common minimum programme.
Speaking to the media at his residence at Kshetri Awang Leikai today, the MLA stated that the decision on supporting the formation of a popular Government rests with the party's Central leadership.
It is unfortunate that some party leaders are making controversial statements in the party's name, he said.
Saying that the statements made by these NPP leaders do not reflect the party's stance, the MLA added that he needed to clarify the misleading statements made by some of the party's leaders.
The press briefing was held on the advice of the party's National leaders, he said and added that NPP is a key partner of the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government at the Centre.
Saying that the Central Government has been working to restore normalcy in the State under the supervision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he sought cooperation from the people in the initiative.
He also said that the NPP will take its political decisions after reviewing the measures to restore normalcy and after taking opinions from party leaders.
