Medical experts deliberate on organ transplantation

Imphal, December 22 2017: The Department of Surgery, JNIMS organised a meet on the Continuing Medical Education (CME) on Deceased Organ Donation today at its auditorium .

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Professor Th Bhimo (Director, JNIMS), Professor Sunil Shroff (Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation) and Kh Sulochana (President, IMA, Manipur Branch and HoD, Department of Microbiology, RIMS, Imphal) as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively .

Professor S Rajendra (HoD, Department of Urology, RIMS) and Assistant Professor K Sholay Meitei (Department of Urology, JNIMS) were also seated on the dais as the organising chairman and organising secretary respectively .

Speaking at the function, Professor Bhimo said, "The Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994 initiated organ donation and transplantation in India and some States like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and NGOs like the MOHAN Foundation have taken a leading role in organ transplantation in India."
He elaborated on the process of organ donation from a deceased and how hospitals need to frame appropriate methods to identify and certify brain dead and then set up a good team for counselling and providing information to families and relatives of brain-dead persons.

While figuring the annual death from road traffic accidents in India as 1.4 lakh according to a study, the Director said 67 per cent of these victims suffered head injury and added that nearly 93 percent of them who are brain dead can be potential organ donors.

He observed that sensitisation of health workers to conduct CMEs for organ donation and transplantation at JNIMS is a must to educate medical and paramedical persons for the development of deceased organ infrastructure at JNIMS .

He also stressed on the need for training counsellors and transplant coordinators to motivate the relatives and families of potential organ donors besides formulating national guidelines for organ transplantation .

Dr Bhimo also assured of extending all possible help and cooperation from JNIMS in the effort to materialize deceased organ donation and transplantation at the hospital for organs restoration of individuals in North East region whose organs are failing and need transplantation .

Prof Sunil Shroff asserted that only seven States in India conduct deceased organ transplantation although transplantation has been in existence since 1995 in India .

The whole of East India does not have deceased organ transplantation and the requirement for organ transplantation, particularly kidney transplantation is huge in the country as kidney infection is increasing with 60 percent of this infection caused by diabetes and hypertension .

Stating that deceased organ transplantation in a hospital is a team work, Sunil drew the attention of JNIMS Director telling that sincere and consistent effort of the head of an institution is required to make deceased organ transplantation possible in the institution .

Asserting that his NGOs is planning to set up at least four labs for deceased organ transplantation in as many zones of India, the professor expressed that Imphal and Guwahati would become the first cities in North East India where deceased organ transplantation is made possible .

Many medical experts, including those from outside the State gave their speeches on various topics related to deceased organ transplantation at the event.
