The Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) convened a consultative meeting today at the office of APSHRC along Zoo Road, Itanagar with a focus on the promotion and protection of human rights, sharing best practices and strengthening institutional frameworks in alignment with National and international standards.
Welcoming the guests from MHRC, the Secretary of APSHRC expressed hope that the meeting will provide a platform to collaborate, exchange ideas and work towards creating a society where human rights are not just protected but actively promoted.
The meeting began with an introductory session where experts, officials and stakeholders shared best practices in human rights protection, emphasizing pro-active approaches in addressing human rights violations chaired by Kangjam Khagendra Singh, Member, MHRC.
He also threw light on the history and functioning of MHRC.
Meanwhile, Bamang Tago, Acting Chairperson, APSHRC presented a PPT on the history and functioning of APSHRC.
Participants discussed the Commission's mandate to investigate human rights violations, recommend corrective measures and advise the Government on policy matters related to human rights.
Officers and staff from both the Commissions highlighted successful initiatives and challenges faced in the implementation of human rights policies.
The meeting further deliberated on the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, which serves as the legal foundation for human rights commissions in India.
Discussions also covered the Paris Principles, the international benchmark for the functioning of national human rights institutions, ensuring independence, accountability and effectiveness.
Officials shared experiences on working protocols, complaint redressal mechanisms and case studies demonstrating the impact of the SHRC's interventions.
A PPT in this regard was presented by W Basantakumar, Law Officer, MHRC.
The discussions reinforced the need for continued collaboration between human rights bodies, Government agencies and civil society to ensure a more robust human rights framework.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthening institutional mechanisms, fostering awareness, and upholding human rights principles for all individuals.
The MHRC Member was also accompanied by Under Secretary Ziaur Rahman.
