Imphal, May 12 2026: A 48-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for committing sexual assault on his own daughter several times in the year 2022 .

The man was convicted by the Court of Special Judge, POCSO, Senapati on May 7 and he was produced before the same Court today for sentence hearing through video conferencing.

During the sentence hearing, Special PP Koshia Mao submitted that the nature of the offence committed by the convict is extremely heinous and barbaric as the victim of the case is only 7 years old and the act committed by the convict is inhumane.

The convict being a father was in a position of trust to the victim, the psychological and physical trauma caused to the victim in irreversible, the convict has not shown any remorse and threatened his brother during jail visit and the society demands that such criminal be kept behind the bars for life, the Special PP said.

He urged the Court to award the convict the severest punishment.

On the other hand, a defence counsel of the convict submitted that the convict is from the poorest society and has already undergone custody during trial and urged to take a lenient view and impose the minimum sentence prescribed by the law.

The Court, after hearing the submissions of the Special PP and the defence counsel, sentenced the convict to undergo life imprisonment under section 6 of POCSO Act and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 .

On default of payment of the fine, the convict must undergo another 6 months of imprisonment, mentioned the Court order.

The Court also ordered relevant authorities to provide a compensation of Rs 7 lakh to the victim in view of the horrific crime meted out to her which will have a lifelong mental and emotional impact.

The compensation amount shall be paid from the Victim Compensation Fund and the compensation shall be paid within 30 days, the Court directed.
