Imphal, August 11 2025:
The Socialist Revolutionary Party (SOREPA), Kangleipak has called a general strike all over Kangleipak/Manipur from 5 am to 5 pm of August 15, the Independence Day of India.
A statement issued by the outfit's Publicity and Organization Secretary MC Yaiphabi recalled Manipur regained its independence on August 14, 1947, one day ahead of India from the British empire.
Soon after, the Manipur Constitution was adopted, elections were held and an elected Government was formed.
It is in records that Manipur was the first country in the entire South and South East Asia to adopt a Constitution and form a democratic Government soon after the end of British colonialism, it said.
It is also in records that the king of Manipur, then just a Constitutional head of the Government, was forced to sign the Manipur Merger Agreement under duress on September 21, 1949 at Shillong.
Since then, the people of Manipur have been waging a war of liberation against the forced annexation of Manipur/Kangleipak by India.
The core reason of the Manipur-India political conflict is the violation of the right to self determination of the people of Manipur/Kangleipak by India, it said.
Until and unless the right to self determination of the people of Kangleipak/Manipur is restored, there will be neither peace nor stability in the region, the outfit said.
It then stated the people of Manipur/Kangleipak ought not participate in the Independence Day celebration of India.
Alleging that India has been violating the UN Human Rights Charter, international law and the right to self determination of many independent Nations, SOREPA asserted that there is no meaning to celebration of India's Independence Day in Manipur/Kangleipak.
It alleged that the Government of India has been plotting to create a new Gaza in Manipur/Kangleipak by using proxy fighters and mercenaries.
Saying that the general strike/total shutdown called on August 15 every year is a part of the National resistance movement, the outfit added that the general strike on August 15 will not cover media, medical services and religious functions.
