Imphal, September 23:
Police have flatly rejected the claim of a visually handicapped man that he was brutally bashed up by a team of Imphal West Dist police led by Addl SP Radheshyam while participating in a rally at Taothong Lamkhai, Lamsang on July 18 this year.
Following a complaint petition filed by the visually disabled person namely Mutum Sunil Singh, (27) of Taothong Lamkhai, the Manipur Human Rights Commission had on July 27 asked the DGP to submit a report on the matter.
Complying with the rights panel proceedings, the police said that on receiving a report that a violent mob was burning tyres, blocking road and attempting to destroy Govt properties in between Iroisemba and Lamshang Bazar, a police team led by Addl SP Th Radeshyam rushed to the spot to disperse the crowd.
When the team reached Taothong Bazar, it saw a violent mob rushing towards Lamsang Bazar.
The mob was given sufficient warning to disperse by the security personnel using loud speakers, however the mob ignored the warning and continued to march on, it said.
Feeling the gravity of the situation, the police team then resorted to lobbing tear gas shells and exploding mockery bombs to disperse the crowd.
The situation was finally brought under control at about 4 pm and the team left the spot.
The allegations that Radheshyam and his party had ruthlessly bashed up and used abusive language against Sunil totally is incorrect, said the police report.
Being a responsible officer, special care is always taken not to infringe upon the rights of an individual while dealing with the public, it said.
