Imphal/Jiribam, November 18 2024: A 22-year old student was killed and another sustained critical injuries when security personnel opened fire upon a large crowd of people at Jiribam last night who were against the abduction and inhuman killing of three women and three children including an eight months old baby by Kuki-Zo-Hmar terrorists.

In the course of the protest, heated arguments broke out between the protesters and security personnel at Jiribam Irabot Makhong.

At that time, Special Senior SP (Combat), Manipur Police Nectar Sanjenbam came, allegedly used abusive and offensive words to the protesters and went inside the PWD Guest House by firing some rounds of bullets in the air.

Angered by the action of the Special Senior SP (Combat), the protesters tried to storm the PWD Guest House complex at around 10.40 pm.

The security personnel responded by firing live rounds toward the protesters, killing one student on the spot and inflicting critical injuries to another.

The deceased victim has been identified as Khundrakpam Athouba (23) s/o Tomba of Kamaranga and the injured person has been identified as Keisam Benson (30) s/o Bijen of Bidyanagar.

Infuriated by the killing of the student and inflicting critical injuries to the youth, a large number of people cordoned off the PWD Guest House complex from all directions from last night till this evening.

In the evening, the Jiribam Superintendent of Police came and somehow whisked away Nectar Sanjenbam from the PWD Guest House.

Whereas the people wanted Nectar Sanjenbam to walk from the guest house to Jiri police station, the SP managed to take away Nectar Sanjenbam in a vehicle.

This ignited a fresh round of uproar but the uproar subsided as it became dark coupled with the fact that a large number of Central forces are present in the area.

The situation is still tense and the people are prepared to launch strong protest movements against Nectar Sanjenbam, said sources.

Soon after getting information of the killing, another crowd of aggrieved people stormed the residence of Nectar Sanjenbam located at Uripok and destroyed the main entrance gate around midnight yesterday.
