Imphal, July 15 2025: Commemorating the historic nude protest staged by 12 Meira Paibi activists in front of the western Kangla Gate on July 15, 2004, the 21st anni-versary of Anti-Repression Day was observed today at Lamyanba Shanglen, Konung Lampak.

The protest was staged against the custodial rape and killing of Thangjam Manorama and the excesses of the Indian Army under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 .

Organised by the Observation Committee, Anti-Repression Day 2025, the event was attended by social activist RK Ranendrajit as the chief guest; Khangem-bam Anandi, chairperson, Observation Committee as the functional president; YK Dhiren, president, United Committee Manipur as the guest of honour and Advocate Leishangthem Jadu- mani, advisor, United People’s Front as the resource person.

Floral tributes were offered to the photos of late M Ibemhal, L Ibetombi and S Momon- three out of the 12 women activists who have since passed away.

The gathering also observed a 2-minute silence.

Addressing the gathering, Pangeijam Sobita, general secretary, Nupi Samaj recalled the slew of atrocities committed by Indian security forces under the dra- conian AFSPA.

Under the Act, thousands were killed, maimed, raped and raped and then murdered by the Indian Army.

Some were arrested and never heard from again, she said.

The people of Manipur were kept in fear under this inhumane Act and the totalitarian rule of Indian soldiers.

It is well-known that people also faced many impe- diments when they attempt- ed to seek the help of the Court of law against the atrocities committed by the Indian Armed Forces on innocent citizens of Manipur, added the Nupi Samaj general secretary.

She urged the youth to remember the courage of the 12 brave Meira Paibis who launched the historic nude protest in front of Kangla Fort demanding revocation of AFSPA.

The Anti-Repression Day is being observed to inspire the present generation to emulate their bravery, said P Sobita.
