Ukhrul, October 26 2009:
The mortal remains of Ramchanphy Hongray (19) who was murdered apparently for resisting rape attempt at the apartment of 80/A at Munirka, Delhi was brought back to her native place here today at around 2:45 pm.
According to family members, Ramchanphy Hongray, daughter of Ramyo Hongray of Green Land Ukhrul, went to Delhi to visit her elder sister who works there since four months back and since she was new at the place stayed most of the time indoor while her elder sister went to work.
Pushpa Kumar Sinha (30), a PhD student of IIT who is also staying there on the same apartment as a tenant took full advantage of her staying all alone.
On October 24, at around 11:20 pm he entered the victim's room and raped her before murdering her mercilessly.
To cover up his criminal act and present the murder as a case of suicide, Pushpa Kumar poured kerosene over the girl's lifeless body and set it on fire burning her upper body.
However, when he was listed as one of the suspects, he surrendered himself to the Vasant Vihar police station at Munirka and confessed his crime.
Pushpa Kumar Sinha was produced before a Patiala Court today.
While police investigation is still going on into the murder case, post mortem report is being awaited.
Meanwhile, the Ukhrul Students' Union (HKL) has strongly condemned the double crime perpetrated by Sinha and urged for punishment of the culprit at the earliest Saying that this was not the first and would not be the last as long as racist attitude pervades in the national capital, the union asserted that discrimination against the North Eastern community by the Delhi Government has made the city not a safe place for further studies as well as working there as many types of crime have been committed against the people of the region sporadically.
Further charging that due to discrimination by the Delhi Government and its biased attitude, the North East people become an easy prey for racial assault and abuse, the student body alleged.
It is reported that funeral service of Ramchanphy Hongray will be held tomorrow at her residence at Green Land, Ukhrul.
The Manipuri Diaspora Association, Delhi has also condemned the murder of Ramchanphy Hongray by one Pushpam Sinha (24) at Murnika, Delhi.
A press release issued by the association demanded that the murderer should be awarded the severest form of punishment for his inhumane act.
Quoting a news report published in a national daily (Times of India) recently that a girl from Arunachal Pradesh was harassed by school students in Bharat Nagar near New Friends Colony, Delhi, the Manipuri Diaspora Association conveyed deep concern on the rising cases of harassment of Northeastern people, particularly women, in Delhi.
Pointing out that people from North East region have been facing numerous problems in Delhi because of their different culture, language and identity, the association asserted that law enforcing authorities of Delhi should understand these problems of the North East people.
In what appears to be a bloody retaliation for rejection, a 34-yr-old PhD student of IIT-Delhi allegedly murdered and burnt the teenager who was his neighbour in Munirka, south Delhi, on Saturday.
Ramchanphy Hongray's burnt body was discovered on Saturday evening and her neighbour, Pushpam Sinha, was arrested on Sunday.
Initially, police thought it was a case of accidental death but the postmortem report revealed that the 19-year-old girl was strangled to death and burnt.
Sinha, who hails from Patna, had graduated from an engineering college in Allahabad and completed his MSc from IISc, Bangalore.
He was doing PhD in wave mechanics from IIT-Delhi on a monthly scholarship of Rs 14,000 .
Sinha reportedly told the cops he lived next door to Hongray and she had been rejecting his advances over the past few days.
On Saturday afternoon, when she was alone at home, he entered the house and assaulted her.
When she resisted, he allegedly strangled her and then set her body on fire in the kitchen to remove evidence, police said.
A murder case has been registered in the Vasant Vihar station.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit has appealed to constitute an enquiry body to probe the incident.
