WMC tears into CM's "normalcy has been restored" remark

Imphal, April 15 2024: World Meetei Council (WMC) has expressed shock and bewilderment over Chief Minister N Biren Singh's claim that normalcy has been restored in Manipur during an interview with a National media house (The Economic Times) yesterday.

A press release issued by Yambem Arun Meetei, secretary general, CEC, WMC accused the Chief Minister of blatantly skipping over the recent bouts of attacks launched by Kuki militants while consistently heaping praises on the Central Government in connection with NRC, ILP, FMR and fencing of Indo-Myanmar border.

It appears that the Chief Minister is unconcerned about the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) sheltering at relief camps who were attacked with guns and whose homes have been torched as he seems confident that BJP-NDA will win both seats in the coming Lok Sabha elections and hailed both the PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for restoring normalcy in Manipur, said WMC.

WMC also questioned why the Chief Minister failed to address the popular demand for inclusion of the Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list during the interview.

Stating that the 2026 delimitation exercise will put the Meeteis in a perilous situation, WMC urged the Chief Minister to secure rightful Constitutional protection for the Meeteis and send the socioeconomic and ethnographic reports to the Centre at the earliest.

Separately, WMC staged a demonstration at Tejpur Mayai Leikai under Kakching district today as part of their ongoing campaign demanding ST status for Meeteis.

The demonstration was led by Urikkhimbam Kunjo, president WMC Manipur Unit; Elangbam Brojenkumar, joint secretary, WMC Manipur Unit and Elangbam Ratan Singh, member, WMC Manipur.

Members of Tejpur Apunba Meira Paibi and various Tejpur clubs participated in the protest.
