Imphal, September 24 2023:
Former minister and Congress Working Committee (CWC) steering committee member Gaikhangam has questioned the rationale behind the passing of Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament and likened Prime Minister Narendra Modi's role in the ongoing violence in Manipur to 'Nero fiddles while Rome burns'.
Addressing media persons at his Mantripukhri residence Saturday, Gaikhangam said passing of Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament was not in the spirit of women empowerment or honouring women as there is no possibility of implementing the legislation with immediate effect.
BJP hurriedly introduced the Bill and passed the same in Parliament ohly to woo women voters with an eye on the upcoming polls as the saffron party fears of defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Amendment to the Bill has to be made immediately after passing but there is no possibility of amendment in the coming five years or so as no census exercise was carried out in 2021, he said adding BJP may try not to implement the Bill.
While informing that the first ever session of CWC since its constitution was held on September 16 and 17 in Hyderabad, Gaikhangam said the session was attended by PCC president and CLP leader.
Before taking up any agenda, the session paid homage to victims of the ethnic violence in Manipur and prayed for their souls to rest in peace in the heavenly abode.
The CWC session took the present crisis in Manipur very seriously and took a resolution to bring back peace in Manipur and it figured fourth on the 11-point resolution, Gaikhangam said and informed that Congress and its alliance are taking big role in restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur.
Likening Prime Minister Narendra Modi's role in the ongoing violence in Manipur to 'Nero fiddles while Rome burns', Gaikhangam questioned as to why PM Narendra Modi is making no effort to resolve the present crisis.
He also asked if Manipur did any wrong in the past.
