Imphal, February 06 2024:
The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi (NGMA) partnered with Penguin Books and Imasi Foundation in conducting an interaction programme with authors L Somi Roy and Dr Thangjam Hindustani Devi centred on their latest book titled "Feathers, Fools and Farts".
The event was held on Tuesday at the NGMA Library where a book on Manipuri folklore was launched by union minister of state for external affairs Meenakshi Lekhi, marking a significant milestone in the portrayal of Manipuri folktales and visual arts on a national platform.
"Feathers, Fools and Farts" is reinterpretation of traditional Manipuri folktales, ingeniously retold by the authors.
Notably, the book's illustrations, crafted by Sapha Yumnam, serve as a focal point, embodying the rich visual heritage of Manipur.
The event not only celebrated the literary narrative but also paid homage to Manipur's profound artistic tradition, which remains relatively undiscovered on a broader scale.
Meenakshi Lekhi also attended the gathering with a special reading from the book.
Her rendition of "The Autumn Lamp - Mera wa yungba," depicting the bond between the Meetei and Tankhul communities, added an emotional touch to the evening's proceedings.
For author L Somi Roy, the launch of the book at NGMA holds immense significance, particularly in shedding light on Sapha Yumnam's illustrations and introducing Manipuri visual arts to a broader audience.
He expressed his gratitude towards Penguin for its pivotal role in not only publishing this book but also fostering the recognition of Manipuri art on a global stage.
Dr Thangjam Hindustani echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the unique amalgamation of art and storytelling showcased in the event.
She noted the profound impact of NGMA's programme in showcasing Manipuri art as a distinct and valuable art form, with Penguin's continued support in championing this cause.
"The programme is also special as it is perhaps the first Manipuri book event at the NGMA library.
Personally, it's the first program of my first published work and therefore has a special meaning as well," Dr Hindustani said.
