Imphal, September 02 2014:
Stating that it always stand against oppression of people in any part of the world, North East Forum for International Solidarity(NEFIS) has strongly condemned the killing of two peaceful protesters in Ukhrul, Manipur and leaving many others injured in police firing.
In a statement, the Forum pointed out that the residents of Ukhrul were demanding the lifting of the indefinite curfew imposed in Ukhrul two months ago.
All the protesters were unarmed and were participating in a peaceful protest when Manipur police commandos and jawans of the India Reserve Battalion fired on the protesters indiscriminately.
Ukhrul has been under the restrictive Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for a few months due to tensions between the government and pro-Naga groups.
If such incidents re-occur NEFIS will call for a nation-wide protest against the Manipur state's oppression on people's movement, the statement added.
