Imphal, February 22 2024:
The upcoming session of the Manipur State Assembly, scheduled to begin from February 28, should take a decision to end the conflict in the state which has been raging since May 3 last year, Communist Party of India-Manipur State Council (CPI-MSC) has demanded.
Addressing a press meet at Irawat Bhawan, here, on Thursday, CPI-MSC state secretary L Thoiren said that the 10 Kuki MLAs should be made to attend the upcoming session of the assembly.
The session must then take a unanimous decision to put an end to the prevailing conflict once and for all.
Observing that the session may lack transparency with regard to the prevailing conflict or any sign of arriving at any possible resolution, Thoiren maintained that there are, however, signs of the central and state governments doing as they please.
This, in turn, is making it seem like as if there is no government in Manipur at times.
"Even if there is a government, no action has been taken against the 10 MLAs who have broken their oaths.
The Kuki militant outfits which have inked the SoO agreement with the government, have failed to adhere to the ground rules.
If the rules of SoO cannot be respected and adhered to, then there is no meaning for continuation of the agreement.
Thus, SoO must be scrapped," he asserted.
He continued that in a democracy, elections play a vital role.
However, trying to hold the elections amidst the conflict will not ensure free and fair election.
As such, any plans to conduct the elections in the state must be put on hold until normalcy and peace is restored.
Any forced attempt to hold the election will invite agitations, he cautioned.
CPI ex-state secretary L Sotinkumar said that many terrifying scenes created by the centre are on the rise.
No action has been taken up with regard to vandalism at government offices in Churachandpur including the disrespect shown towards the national flag.
He then demanded for taking a stand against the 10 separatists MLAs.
However, the centre's support for the 10 MLAs is evident from summoning of the MLAs to Delhi for talks, inauguration of a Jawahar Navodaya School in Kangpokpi by the PM, who lauded the local MLA Nem-cha Kipgen, which was intentional.
All of these show the centre's true nature, he remarked.
Mentioning of the recent incident at Cheirap Court complex a few days ago, Sotinkumar said that this is a sign of failing law and order situation in the state.
Manipur has been burning for a long time but the centre is focused on elections.
While the conflict remains unsolved, the disharmony in the state is growing day by day.
Churachandpur and Moreh are basically inaccessible.
Thus, NRC must be implemented immediately in Manipur to put an end to the conflict, he asserted, while adding that CPI-MSC's main demand is for the assembly session to take a concrete decision to quell the unrest in the state.
