Imphal, November 04 2023:
Rural Engineering Department (RED) Chief Engineer Pantishing Thamei has clarified that the construction works of 10 Kms long Yaingangpokpi Bazar-Chadong road and 15 Kms long Kangkhum-Wangle road are not complete.
Clarifying to the reports published in some sections of the media that bills for the two roads have been withdrawn even though the construction works have not been completed, Pantishing Thamei said that the department has not yet made any announcement that the two road works have been completed.
The date of completion written in the signboards of the two road works is stipulated date of completion, the Chief Engineer said.
The road works have been delayed beyond the stipulated date of completion as almost two years were lost due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Soon after the road works resumed following containment of the pandemic, the State plunged into the present turmoil, thus bringing the works to a halt again, he said.
At the same time, there is a strict instruction from the ministry concerned that PMGSY Phase-I and Phase-II must be fully executed by March 31, 2024.As such, the department has been working hard to complete construction works of the two roads before March 31 next year, Pantishing Thamei said.
The road construction works are going on and the final bills have not been released yet, he said.
The report that bills have been withdrawn without completing the road construction works is incorrect and unfounded, he contended.
Some culverts built by Water Resources Department on Yaingangpokpi Bazar-Chadong road were repaired in public interest and there was no question of overpaying the contractors, he said.
Of the 22 culverts, repairing works have been completed on 14 and the remaining would be completed by March next year, said the RED Chief Engineer.
Saying that Yaingangpokpi Bazar-Chadong road and Kangkhum-Wangle road are low volume traffic roads , the Chief Engineer said that movement of heavy trucks loaded with timber has been damaging the PMGSY roads.
Additional Chief Engineer Th Ingoba was also present at the press meet.
