Imphal, May 02 2014 :
Local clubs and Meira Paibee organizations of Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency in Imphal East have banned commercial water tankers from fetching water from the Iril River since yesterday.
However, private individuals would still be allowed to fetch water from the river in view of the present water crisis.
A Meira Paibee member told Hueiyen Lanpao that all people in the State are now facing problem of water scarcity due to inadequate rainfall and subsequent drying up of most rivers and other water bodies.
However, Iril River still has some water in Kshetrigao area and so many commercial water takers have thronged to collect water from the river.
More than 100 commercial tankers ranging from diesel autos to Tata 407 mini-trucks used to fetch water from Iril River daily.
Those commercial water carriers are exploiting the water resource of Iril River just to make their money.
They are selling the water at high price to the public taking undue advantage of the water current scarcity.
Everyone can share the water that is available in the river, but commercial activities cannot be allowed to continue.
All commercial tankers would be banned from fetching water from Iril River, but there would be no ban on private individuals fetching water from the river for their own usage, the Meira Paibee members said.
Meanwhile, several local clubs in Kshetrigao area have started to pump water from the river to various ponds for common use in their localities.
