Role of NGOs stressed in promoting language

Director of Language Planning and Implementation, Dr Laishram Mahabir Singh has stated that NGOs play a huge role in ensuring the development and advancement of Manipuri language.
Speaking at the 15th foundation day of MEELAL at GM Hall today, Dr Laishram Mahabir Singh said that languages develop based on the usage by the people and lauded the contribution of MEELAL and other similar organisations in trying to promote Manipuri language.
Pointing out that Manipuri language is neither a dying nor a dead language, he said that Manipuri language is actually well developed and simply needs some polish.
He informed that Manipuri language is one among the 22 modern Indian language and added that a comprehensive proposal is being planned to urge the authority concerned to include Manipuri language in the classical language of the country.
Mahabir said that a high level committee will be formed for the said purpose and aproposal will be sent to the Ministry of Culture, India within this year.
On the other hand Dr Mahabir said that almost all the languages contain some mixed languages.
The presence of a few mixed language or words from other languages should not be a matter of concern, he said and added that this is the norm in today's world.
Speaking at the event, Thokchom Babulchand Meitei of MEELAL, said that on the,occasion of the association's foundation day, MEELAL has been organising felicitation programme for motivating the students (from Meitei Pangal, tribal and Meitei communities) who secured high marks in Meitei Mayek in both class X and XII exams.
A total of 17 students (12 class X students and 5 class XII students, have been felicitated this year as well, he added.
