Imphal, February 06 2024:
The Tangkhul Aze Katamnao Long (Southern Tangkhul Students' Union) has imposed an indefinite economic blockade from February 7, 2024 (tomorrow) along National Highway No.102 (Kasom Khullen - Yairipok Road) from 5pm onwards.
The indefinite economic blockade has been imposed due to Government's failure to look into the matter for proper execution of PMGSY work in its area though the union had given an ultimatum for the construction of the road to be executed before the Christmas of 2023, said a press note by publicity and information secretary TAKL.
It may be noted that in the display boards of In the display boards of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the construction of PMGSY roads, Yaingangpokpi (Bazar) to Chadong, Kangkum to Wangli, Sikibung to Louphong and L029 to Nongdam (T) has been shown as completed.
However the said works have never been executed by the contractors and the roads still remained untouched by sprinkling some pebbles in some areas.
It is a direct insult to the hill people displaying in the board that the work was completed without completion, said the release.
Though the union has served two memorandums to the concern Ministers of RD & PR concerned, for taking up necessary actions for the negligence of PMGSY works in the hills (especially in the Southern Tangkhul Region) in the month of November, 2023, the Government has not given any positive response, therefore the union has been compelled to proceed with the economic blockade.
It maintained that the Union is not against the Government but to demand justice for the negligence and failure of the contractors and the Departments concerned for proper execution of this work in the hills.
'All the activities will be exempted from the purview of the indefinite economic blockade, except commercial vehicles and all the Government vehicles in our jurisdiction will be totally restricted', it said .
Further it appealed to the general public and all the TAKL units (villages) to cooperate and support this agitation for the welfare of its people.
The union informed that it has to resort to the democratic means of agitation as no options has been left to fulfil their demands since the Government has neglected the same for more than 3 months.
