Imphal, August 17:
The State wide general strike called by the Apunba Lup from today totally paralysed normal lives in the State with shops downing shutters and vehicles staying off the road.
All educational institutions also remained closed and attendance in Govt office was practically nil.
The general strike was also successfully observed at Jiribam with most shops and schools remaining closed.
However the bandh hardly had any effect at Thoubal and Kakching as shops remained open.
However the streets wore a deserted look as all inter dist transport service remained suspended due to the bandh.
At Bishnupur, the general strike was observed in letter and spirit as an indefinite curfew is still being imposed in the area following the self immolation of Chittaranjan on August 15.Mention may be made here that the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup had imposed a State wide general strike till the funeral rites of Chittaranjan finalised.
