Imphal, June 22 2013 :
Alleging harassment and intimidation by a sub Inspector of Imphal East district police, a former convict has drawn the attention of police authorities to check unwarran-ted activities of the SI and enable the victim lead a normal life.
making the disclosure to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, 30-year old Mutum Warjit s/o M Modhu-mangol of Keirao Bitra Lairembi Leikai claimed that on June 19 at around 3.30 pm a commando team of Irilbung police station led by (SI) Herojit told his family elders that he (Warjit) should be present at the police station.
As Warjit was not at home the said SI reportedly left a contact number and reminded the family that he has to explain/clarify on some issues.
Even though information was conveyed through the local pradhan Mutum Ra-meshchandra that he would be present at the police station on Sunday (June 23), the SI showed up at the Mutum residence today (June 22) and questioning Warjit's audacity not to comply with the police insistence threatened the family that Warjit will have to face all consequences.
Later last evening, Warjit accompanied by his father and the pradhan reported at Iril-bung police station where Warjit was grilled inside a police vehicle (Gypsy) while the two others were led to a room, he maintained.
Apart from questioning activities of Itomba Ning-thoujam, who contested from Keirao AC in the 10th Mani-pur Legislative Assembly election, Warjit said that he was accused of being familiar with a member of a Zeliangrong armed organisation and told to produce documents of the outfit.
On being asked about one David of Tamenglong, Warjit confessed of knowing the individual during his stay in the prison.
On the SI linking him to a Kuki outfit, Warjit denied and was subsequently asked to leave.
Contending that the SI also insisted that he (Warjit) cease working as Itomba's PRO, Warjit lamented continuous harassment by the police due to his past record of imprisonment for his alleged link with UG groups during the assembly election.
Having served jail term after arrest with four others on january 5, 2011, Warjit claimed that he was released as his detention under NSA could not be corroborated during subsequent trials.
Regretting the police restricting his movement to such an extent that he might even have to seek permission for private matters also, Warjit desired that if his guilt, if any, could not be established he deserves to live life as a normal citizen.
Calling upon police authorities to probe the SI's conduct, he also desired that civil society organisations initiate appropriate action on the matter.
Itomba Ningthoujam was also present during the media briefing.
