Economic Census now covers handicraft

To get correct information and data, people need to share the correct information during Census activities, said P Vaiphei, Principal Secretary, Economics and Statistics.
Addressing media today as a part of the series of press conferences held at DIPR complex, Moirangkhom here, P Vaiphei said that the works done by the department is highly specialised.
The data collected and published by the department are used for various purposes.
According to the 6th Economic Census, there were 2,29,838 establishments with 4,09,617 persons employed therein, said Peijonna Kamei, Director.
A new feature included in the 6th EC was coverage of handicraft sector and information on establishments run by women entrepreneurs.
It was found that there were 57,004 handicraft establishments (Thoubal-highest, Tamenglong-least) with an employment of 75,121.And there were 88,286 (38.4%) establishments run by women entrepreneurs providing employment of 1,10,822 (27.1%) .
The 74th round of National Sample Survey (NSS) (July, 2016 to June, 2017) is dedicated to the Services Sector and will be conducted in Manipur also.
Entrepreneurs should submit the returns along with the balance sheet.
It will be done in two phases.
"Economic Census is the complete count of all establishments i.e.units/under- takings situated in a single location in which one kind of economic activity is carried out predominantly such that at least a part of the goods and/or services produced by the unit goes for sale," Peijonna added.
The Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Manipur participated in the all India programme and has so far conducted six Economic Censuses.
The latest i.e.the 6th EC was conducted in 2013 .
The department is manned by 200 staff and 136 posts are lying vacant.
The Directorate collects, compiles, pro- cesses, analyses and presents data on various socio-economic aspects of the State at State/disaggregated level in systematic manner and disseminate the data through periodic publication.
It liaises with statistical organization, coordinates the statistical activities, standardizes questionnaires, ensures adoption of uniform concepts and conducts sample survey and other adhoc field enquiries.
The Directorate collects primary/secondary data through survey/correspondences with Government departments and other source agencies.
The collected information are incorporated in publications brought out periodically or used for analysis to generate different types of estimates or supplied as such to statistical organisation or data users as requisitioned.
The subject covered differs from round to round as decided by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India.
The survey conducted during 1962-63 to 2015-16 by Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Manipur covered village statistics, urban labour force, earning from professions and liberal arts, construction, indebtedness of scheduled tribe households education , jhum, maternal and childcare, disability, land holdings, employment, social consumption, culture , migration, tourism etc.
The Director has appealed to the people that data is of the people and by the people.
"Every citizen and organisation of the State are therefore requested to extend maximum cooperation in divulging information/sharing data so as to enable the Directorate to document data so as to ensure adequacy of reliable data for use at the right time and in the right way for a better Manipur", continued the Director.
The District Statistical Offices collect the prices every month on regular basis from district headquarters markets.
The Directorate conducts Employment and Unemployment Survey (EUS) under the aegis of the Labour Bureau, Ministry of Labour and Employment Govt.of India.
The last survey was the 5th conducted in 2015.The Directorate does field work only while the labour bureaus provide the schedule/format for data collection and also processed the data to generate report.
Basic Statistics for Local Level Development (BSLLD) is also collected.
Adhoc surveys were done for Household Demographic Survey (2003), Socio Economic Survey of Meitei Pangal, Manipur (2004), Integrated Household Survey of Imphal Municipal Area (2008) and 5% Sample Checking of Unified District Information on School Education (U-DISE), 2015-16 .
Other activities include estimation of State Income, area and production of agricultural crops, Budget Analysis (Public) etc.
