Workshop on climate change reporting held

Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Manipur yesterday organised a consultative workshop on "Climate Change Reporting" at Porompat, Imphal.
It was attended by Prof Pradeep Kumar, Head, Geography Department, Manipur University; Directorate of Environment & Climate Change Manipur, Senior Consultant (Scientific), Manichandra Sanajaoba; senior journalist Pradeep Phanjoubam and media fellows of 4th Media Fellowship.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Pradeep Kumar asserted that the growing constructions and urbanisation have caused great pressure on the rivers flowing through Imphal Valley.
He continued that rapid urbanisation in Imphal Valley including construction works of roads, bridges, etc have created a great pressure, even changing the flow of water bodies.
He also elaborated on water cycle, effects of deforestation, over exploitation of water in the urban areas and water quality degradation.
Manichandra Sanajaoba shared that climate change is a serious problem, and its consequences are evident with the increasing frequency & intensity of floods in the State over the years.
Pradeep Phanjoubam mentioned that despite receiving an average annual rainfall of over 1000 mm, there is frequent drought and flood in Manipur due to poor water management.
