Imphal, January 15:
This correspondent visited a village marked by absence of all basic amenities in Senapati District yesterday.
Only 38 kms from Imphal the village called Laikhong in Andro assembly constituency though electrified has not been receiving power supply for the last 12 years.
There is a government LP School that stands like a monument without any teacher.
The lone teacher comes to the school rarely and occasionally.
In such village where even electricity has not been supplied can one think of getting drinking water? The villagers talking to this correspondent said twelve years back when Amuujao was representing the assembly constituency (Andro, the village happens to fall in Andro constituency), the village received electricity regularly.
Some eight years back the power transformer from the village was taken away for repairing, never to be brought again.
The villagers complained that the present representative S Chandro is not finding time to look into the requirement of the people of the area.
The local people collected fund through donation to extend electric wire up to the village.
The villagers also wanted establishment of a primary Health Centre at the village to solve the problems facing the villagers.
As only two buses reach the village transportation is a problem and the patient requiring immediate care of the doctor will have to die before reaching the hospital.
The villagers have no source of income of their own to support themselves and those dependent on them.
Cutting reed, firewood and growing vegetables are the main occupation of the villagers.
The tiny village has a population of 950 of whom 250 are in the voter list.
The village is inhabited the Meiteis only.
If the government would not do any thing for us, who would care us up, they asked.
The villagers warned that the effigy of the local MLA will be burned and then he will be boycotted if he fails to look into the requirement of the people.
