The 24 hour bandh called by the Students' Joint Action Committee for Conversion of South East Manipur College at Chandel and Pallel areas concluded peacefully today at 6 pm.
The JAC is demanding the conversion of the South East Manipur College, Komlathabi into a full fledged Government institution.
All vehicular traffic on NH-39 between Imphal and Moreh came to a screeching halt during the bandh.
Vehicles also stayed off the road at Machi, Sugnu and Chakpikarong.
Bandh supporters came out in full strength at some points and turned back vehicles.
Some vehicles were also stoned by bandh supporters.
Speaking to The Sangai Express convenor of the JAC, S Dangla said that if the Government does not react positively, then an indefinite bandh would be imposed on the Imphal-Moreh route from January 17.Local MLA and Social Welfare Minister DK Korungthang has also not been able to give any standing assurance that the college would be taken over by the Government.
The college caters to the need of a vast number of students in the area, said the local people and added that they fully support the bandh called by the JAC.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, the Principal of the college, Ng Ngamshing said that the college was set up in 1981 and till date it is yet to receive grant-in-aid from the Government.
Other colleges set up around the same time have received aid from the State Government, he added.
